Thicker iPad3

iPad 3iPad 3 Rumors continue to hit the internet.

We have discussed several leaks from the supply chain for the iPad 3 the past week. There were leaks of the back component of the iPad 3 and then the actual iPad 3 display. A Chinese tech blog has reportedly received a early production version of the newest iPad. The rumors coming from the tech blog is that the iPad 3 is going to be 1 to 1.5mm thicker then the current iPad 2. It is also reported to have more tapered edges compared to the current iPad model.

There are several possible reasons for the increase in thickness compared to the previous iPad model. The most likely is the increase in battery size. An increase in processing power with the inclusion of the Apple A5X coupled with the iPad3 Retina Display would result in some heavy battery consumption. Battery life has been a focus from Apple, with a desire to stay around 10 hours run time on a charge. Battery technology is always evolving but still lags behind other technologies in many ways. A small increase in thickness could give the amount of space needed to fit a battery that can supply power for the new technology at the specified desired time length.

The other possibility for the increase in thickness is the new camera included in the iPad 3. The new iPad is reported to include a similar or the same camera as is included in the iPhone 4S. This camera is to thick to be fit into the current dimensions of the iPad 2 according to some reports. The increase in thickness would provide enough space to fit the 8MP camera with the new iPad3 for release.

The last rumor is that the iPad 3 has increased in thickness to fit in the chip for 4G LTE. This is probably the least likely of the three rumors but is still a possibility. We believe Apple would more likely release 4G on an iPhone compared to the iPad series, but we could be wrong. Apple currently does not offer any devices with the newest cell technology, and would surely be newsworthy if included with the release of the iPad 3.
