There have been many exciting rumors about the iPad 3 release. One of the newest rumors has been that the iPad 3 will in fact be even thinner then the current edition. This holds true for the current iPads, but there might be a slight dilemma if you plan on purchasing the new iPad 3.
According to an Asian source that reported to CNET, it is possible that the new iPad 3, which is possibly going to be thicker than the current iPad 2, will feature a thinner 24 pin connector than the one currently found in the iPad 2. This could hint at the overall device being thinner than the previous ones, but that isn’t certain yet. What is certain, however, is that if they do decide to use a new, thinner 24 pin connector, all the accessories that use the 24 pin connector will no longer work with the new iPad 3, and new versions of these accessories will need to be purchased. If you aren’t currently an iPad owner, you might not think that you would use any accessories, so this isn’t an issue, but if you are an iPad owner at the moment, you will understand how serious this truly is.
There are many extremely popular accessories for the current iPad 2, and all of these will need to be replaced if this rumor of a thinner 24 pin connector is true. For example, thousands of iPad 2 owners own and love keyboards for their iPad 2. With an external keyboard you can optimize your speed and efficiency of working on your iPad, especially if you are doing a lot of work such as note taking or writing, as it can speed you up drastically. These current accessories would need to be replaced with newer iPad 3 specific accessories if the rumors are true that the 24 pin connector will be thinner. The same thing goes for other accessories such as FM transmitters or other accessories.
So while the thinner 24 pin transmitter might mean that the new iPad 3 will be thinner than the current iPad, it also means that you will need to replace any old accessories. The reduced thickness could make that worthwhile for many users, but it is still possible that the iPad 3 will be thicker, and will require new accessories, too.
